Listen to “California” and discover our interview with Ill Nicky below:

1. Can you please tell our readers your real name as well as your stage name?
Nick Beatrice…it’s pronounced Bee-ah-three-chay …it’s Italian
My stage name is ill Nicky and I am the founder of the indie music label, The ill Movement/ill Music Group.
2.Where are you from and Where are you based?
I was born in Boston, raised in the Bay Area and San Diego, reside in LA where I run my music label and recording studio, Studio 403.

3.At What age did you start making music?
I was around 12 years old when I started. My brothers used to rap, living in the Bay that was very common. They never had choruses on their songs so that was my official job in the crew, to just sing the hooks. I loved being that person, and I think it was a huge influence in my ability to make complete songs.

4. What genre would you consider yourself?
My music has definitely gone thru phases. My first songs were definitely very lyrical, I guess you could call it conscious rap. As I evolved, I got a bit more alternative, especially when I began involving live bands in my recording process. I moved away from that live sound and now I would say I make a mix of chill, melodic rap with pop/hip hop influences.
5. Tell us about your latest track or Video ( what is it all about)–Please explain the concept or message.
I try not to make people think too much when it comes to my music/visuals. I definitely am well thought out and intentional in my music, but I just like to make people feel good. I always make a point to be as human as possible, because a lot of us are just looking for someone to relate to, someone to be inspired by. I take pride in being that for some people. That being said, my latest song is called California. I was raised in Cali. For me, it was important to connect with my audience going thru quarantine and being away from the family directly into civil unrest, protests and riots. As someone who lives next to Fairfax High, West Hollywood, everything was right in my backyard. Flash bombs and fireworks going off, cars and buildings getting burned up, military patrolling my little neighborhood with assault rifles, all of that.
My family called and said, “you know what Nick why don’t you come on home for a while and let that stuff calm down.” As good as it sounded to get on the road and just drive, I couldn’t leave. I felt a responsibility to be supportive and show my solidarity, I had to be there for my neighborhood. Between quarantine and feeling obligated to stick around, I wanted to write a song about how I was feeling. “Take you back to the West Side we riding, underneath the helicopter lights and the sirens, I know I know I can’t come back home, but I’d like to.” In the middle of all this going on, my career is completely taking off, I’m getting songs on NBA 2K I’m getting recognized by majors, calls from labels, getting millions of streams on my music, I’m like “what the hell is happening ?” LOL. I guess it was my way of escaping for a brief moment and paying respects to the state that made me who I am.

6.If you were given a chance, which Artist would you love to perform with?
Roddy Ricch. That’s it. I think he really gonna fuck wit my style when he meets me. I think we’ll make incredible music together.
